Al-Qaeda Leader Killed With Drone Strike - What We Know

On August 2, 2022, the United States killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone strike as he reportedly stood on a balcony at his home in Afghanistan. Officials say two Hellfire missiles were shot to kill Zawahiri. U.S. administration says the CIA was responsible for the strike, of whom are yet to comment.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Afghanistan violated the Doha Agreement, with NewsNation's Tom Dempsey explaining that the Doha Agreement stated that Afghanistan would not allow safe harbor Al-Qaeda and the United States would withdraw its forces. With al-Zawahiri being found in Afghanistan, there is expected to create palpable tensions between Afghanistan and the United States. However, Blinken stated, "In the face of the Taliban's unwillingness or inability to abide by their commitments, we will continue to support the Afghan people with robust humanitarian assistance and to advocate for the protection of their human rights, especially of women and girls."

We await further news.
