In the third week of September 2022, a freight train hit a police cruiser with an arrested suspect inside the car. A video was released to the public showing the events that led up to the situation. It showed the police pulled over on the train tracks and arresting Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, who was in a truck and was arrested.
Rios-Gonzalez was suspected in a road rage case, and she was asking why she was being arrested at the time of the handcuffing. She was left in the police vehicle while the officers searched her truck. While the horns and sounds of the train could be heard from a distance, the police appear to have taken at least 15 seconds to notice the incoming train.
When the train was heard, police officers yelled, 'stay back.' When the car was hit, officers immediately realized the suspect was left in the car and called for medical emergencies. According to Paul Wilkinson, Rios-Gonzalez's attorney, she had attempted to leave the car, but the doors were locked, and she feared for the worst when the police couldn't hear her screaming.
Rios-Gonzalez survived and was hospitalized. She is expected to have a long recovery.
The video showed Rios-Gonzalez following police orders but seemingly confused about what was happening.
