Attack On Lee Zeldin - What Are The Facts?

On July 21, 2022, GOP rep. and New York Governor Candidate Lee Zeldin was attacked during a campaign event in Perinton, New York, by 43-year-old David Jakubonis. Jakubonis used a self-defense keychain to assault Zeldin but was stopped by being grabbed on the arm by Zeldin. Jakubonis was reportedly drunk and claimed not to remember who Zeldin was during the attack.

Jakubonis had said, "You're done," to Zeldin as he aimed his weapon at his neck. However, Jakubonis was released quickly due to a New York bail reform. The law ensures that most misdemeanor or nonviolent felony charges do not put the suspect in jail with bail.

Zeldin advocates for lowering crime. He said, "I'm as resolute as ever to do my part to make NY safe again." Opposing New York Governor Candidate Kathy Hochul tweeted, "My team has informed me about the incident at Lee Zeldin's campaign event tonight. Relieved to hear that Congressman Zeldin was not injured and that the suspect is in custody. I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible — it has no place in New York."

We await further news.
