Taiwan Shoots Shots At Chinese Drone - What It Can Mean

On August 30, 2022, Taiwan fired warning shots at a Chinese drone flying over an islet that belongs to Taiwan. The drone flew back to Chinese territory shortly after. Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen ordered the Taiwanese military to take "strong countermeasures" against Chinese provocations.

China has consistently flown drones around Taiwanese islands, to which Taiwan has made multiple complaints. On Monday, China said it is "nothing to make a fuss about."

According to Reuters, U.S. officials claim the drones were more for harassing Taiwan than for escalating a war. However, Tsai has told naval officers, "I want to tell everyone that the more the enemy provokes, the more calm we must be. We will not provoke disputes, and we will exercise self-restraint, but it does not mean that we will not counter."

Radio warnings between the Taiwanese and Chinese naval ships have been going back and forth regularly.

So what does this mean?

According to NBC News, the visit from Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan has raised tensions between China, Taiwan, and the U.S.

China has argued that the U.S.'s One-China policy means that the U.S. must recognize Beijing as the one and only China, making Pelosi's visit very controversial.

We await further news.
