70-Year-Old Man Sets Himself On Fire In Protest - Shinzo Abe Update

In Tokyo, on September 21, 2022, a 70-year-old man set himself on fire in apparent protest. He was sent to the hospital and laid unconscious with severe burns. He later woke up and told police that he had purposefully covered himself in oil and set himself on fire. Near the fire site was a few handwritten notes, one of which said that he strongly opposed the late Shinzo Abe's state funeral.

We do not know what the full content of the notes is, but as usual, we await further news.

However, the political backlash against the Liberal Democratic Party must be noted. The approval rate of the LDP had decreased 6 points to 23%. Moreover, much of the Japanese population does not seem convinced that spending around 12 million yen on this funeral, including security and receptions, is a good use of the government's money.
