Greenwood Park Mall Shooting - An Update

Updated: Jul 19, 2022

Just yesterday, July 17th, 2022, Greenwood Park Mall experienced a shooting that left 3 killed and two injured. The shooter had brought a rifle. He was shot dead by a good Samaritan who had carried a handgun.

Police had revealed that the shooter's name was Jonathan Sapirman. He had supposedly begun shooting into the food court after leaving the bathroom. Although Sapirman could have continued shooting, he had been shot and killed by 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, who was shopping with his girlfriend. Greenwood Police Chief James Ison had stated that Dicken's actions were "nothing short of heroic."

The mall where the shooting took place had a no-gun policy. The mall did not allow individuals to carry firearms inside the building according to the third clause of their code of conduct.

Indiana allows anyone above the age of 18 to carry a handgun in public unless the individual has a criminal record, a mental illness, or a restraining order.

Ison had released information about Sapirman, saying that the shooter had entered the mall and spent an hour inside the bathroom before he emerged and opened fire upon the food court. Sapirman likely spent that time preparing to shoot and assembling the disassembled rifle. He had fired 24 rounds in 2 minutes.

Investigators reported that Sapirman used an AR-15-style rifle and wore a holster that had a loaded handgun. In addition, he had several magazines that contained over 100 rounds of ammunition. There is currently no motive.

Dicken had shot ten rounds from his handgun. As he shot, Sapirman had attempted to retreat to the bathroom, falling after being shot. "He engaged the gunman from quite a distance with a handgun and was very proficient in that, very tactically sound. And as he moved to close in on the suspect, he was also motioning for people to exit behind him," Ison said on Dicken.

Sapirman had a juvenile record for starting a fight in school and running away from home, but there is no adult criminal record. Relatives state Sapirman had been going to the shooting range practicing shooting.

Investigators have found a cell phone and laptop in the bathroom that were both damaged by an oven.

The killed victims have been identified as Pedro Pineda, 56, Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37 - and Victor Gomez, 30. Previously, police believed that the victims were one male and four females, but they later corrected it to two males and three females.

We await further news.
