On July 17, 2022, an adult male brought a long gun to Greenwood Park Mall and killed three people, injuring two others. The victims were identified as being one male and four females. One of the injured victims is said to be a 12-year-old girl who got a minor injury in the back.
Police have shared that the shooter is an adult male. Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison had stated, "It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court, and began shooting." There was a backpack in one of the bathrooms near the foot court where the shooting occurred. The owner is unknown.
Ison had praised the 22-year-old "good Samaritan" saying, "The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began."
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers had created a Facebook post thanking the man who shot the shooter saying, "This person saved lives tonight. On behalf of the City of Greenwood, I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation."
We await further news.
