Early in the morning on August 2, 2022, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan amid Chinese warnings to invade Taiwan.
As Pelosi visits Taiwan to display her support for the island nation, China warns Pelosi that there will be serious consequences to her visit. Pelosi plans to meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Many leaders in China appear to be upset with Pelosi's decision to visit Taiwan, some even saying that she is "playing with fire against people's will." Chinese military says they are on "high alert" as they conduct training exercises around Taiwan. Taiwan also claims to have seen 21 Chinese warplanes in their air defense identification zone (ADIZ).
Beijing sees American officials visiting Taiwan as seeing their proclaimed independence as permanent. On the other hand, Pelosi appears to see visiting Taiwan as standing up for U.S. allies and not giving in to autocrats.
China appears concerned over its national security, saying it will "Take all necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the U.S. House Speaker's visit to Taiwan, China... The U.S. and the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces must be responsible for all the consequences."
We await further news.
