On October 6, 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden announced he would pardon anyone charged with the possession of marijuana on a federal level. Biden said in a video that announced his executive actions, Biden said, "no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana." Although, the pardon only applies to those who have 'simple possession' of the drug.
Around 6,500 people are estimated to be pardoned on the federal level. Biden's reason for doing this is to allow people who only possessed marijuana to have the opportunity to find jobs, houses, or education. Biden also calls for state governors to push state pardons for the same crime, but he has no power to actually make them do anything.
We await for further news.
