Shinzo Abe - A Brief Update

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot by Tetsuya Yamagami, whose motive was noted as being his mother donating to a religious organization that Yamagami hated. Recently, it was discovered that the religious group was the Unification Church.

Yamagami's uncle had admitted that his mother had donated around 100 million yen ($721,875) to the Unification Church. Due to this action, it is said that Yamagami had to give up college because he could no longer afford it. His mother's donation would explain his previous statement that he resented the Church.

The Church claims that it had returned 50 million yen ($360,929) to Yamagami's mother, claiming there are no records of her donation.

The Japanese government is split on having a state funeral for Shinzo Abe, as there is no real law or restriction on who gets a state funeral or how a state funeral should be run. This created a split in the government, arguing about where the taxpayer money should end up.

All state funeral outlines were in a prewar ordinance, which is no longer in use. The current Japanese Constitution does not allow the state and its organs should abstain from religious rituals. Renho, previous deputy chief of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, tweeted, "Taxpayers' money used for the joint funeral. Do you think that's acceptable?"

Current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida argued that because of Abe's achievements, holding a state funeral would show the dedication Japan has to defend democracy and that they would not succumb to violence.
